Favorite Windows Mobile Web Sites So Far

I recently upgrade my phone to a Samsung Blackjack. I work from home a lot and also have to work off hours sometimes due to clients on the east coast. The phone lets me easily keep in contact with my work and since it uses 3G for its network ( I use cingular for the data plan) I can also browse the web on it a decent speeds. It runs windows mobile 5 right now but an upgrade to windows mobile 6 is supposed to be in the works. I have only had it for a few weeks but its working out great so far. These are some of the more useful web sites I have found that I use on the Blackjack. Even though the download speed of this phone is not bad I have still found that the best sites to use are optimized for a cell phone browser. Currently I mostly use the built in mobile version of IE although I have also been experimenting with running Opera Mobile on it. It’s still difficult to navigate around a full size regular web site on the small screen of the black jack, although it is possible.

Here are some of the sites I have found to be the most useful so far:

General

  • Google - Google optimized for mobile applications.
  • Next Muni - This one is specific to San Francisco where I live, but extremely useful. It shows you when the next bus or train is expected at whatever stop you ask it for. No more waiting around wondering when the next street car is coming.
  • Wikipedia - Great for figuring out the answer to almost any trivia question.

News

Entertainment

Weather

In addition to those sites two other must have applications are Google Maps and Microsoft Live Search for mobile. Both of these applications you install on your phone for easy use rather than the usual web site you would use on a computer. They both offer address lookups, driving directions and the capability to find a business or restaurant based on the name. So far I have mostly been using Google Maps since I am more familiar with it but both seem to work about the same. I use it all the time to get driving or walking directions.
