How to use your Samsung Blackjack to connect your laptop to the internet

You already know that the Samsung Blackjack gives you the ability to browse the web and check emails while you are on the road, but did you know that you can also use the blackjack to connect your laptop to the internet? This is a great feature to have when there is not a free public wifi hotspot that you can connect to.

The process for setting this up on your laptop is a little bit tricky. But once you have this setup you have an instant portable internet connection that you can take anywhere with you where you have coverage. If you are in a 3G coverage area the connection speed is actually quite fast.

The technique given here is for connecting using the included USB cable that came with the phone. You can also set this up using blue tooth if you prefer but for now I will just walk through the USB method.

First of all connect your Samsung Blackjack to your laptop using the included USB cable. You should have already installed active sync on your laptop. This program is included with the cd's that came with the Blackjack. Make sure to install the program if you haven't already.

Once your laptop recognizes that the Blackjack has been connected, ActiveSync should open up and you will see a screen similar to this:

Click on the Explore button and then click on the "My Windows Mobile-Based Device" icon and navigate down to the Windows folder. In this folder you will find a file named "Internet Sharing". Right click on that file and select copy. Now paste that link to your Blackjacks \Windows\Start Menu folder. This will create a shortcut to the internet sharing application on your blackjack's start menu. You can rename the shortcut to whatever you want, I just called it Internet Sharing.

You are now set up for Internet Sharing. From now on whenever you want to connect your laptop to the internet do the following:

1.) Connect your laptop and Blackjack using the included USB cable.
2.) On your BlackJack select the internet sharing application you installed and start it up.
3.) Click on the left soft key labeled as "Connect".

That's it! Now your laptop should detect the connection and allow you to connect to the internet through the blackjack. If you are just testing this connection you will want to make sure you disable any other wireless connections you have first so that you can make sure it is connecting through the phone. Once you are done just click on Disconnect on the blackjack.

To me this is another great reason to pick up a Samsung Blackjack. You can now use it as a wireless connection for your laptop.

Were you able to figure out a way to enable Bluetooth DUN on the Blackjack?

No I have not. I believe that Bluetooth DUN is an optional feature in windows mobile 5 and may return in windows mobile 6. You can setup Bluetooth PAN following this tutorial: http://www.i607.org/wiki/doku.php?id=bt_pan_tether_to_windows_and_linux
